On the last weekend of May I wanted to show my family where my father had worked for decades. And where I used to work for several weeks as a pupil during summer vacation. So we took a walk through the former area of the Felten & Guilleaume Carlswerk AG in Cologne. We saw the gate, where my father used to push his bike in and out, discovered the some huge factory halls which looked familiar to me and I tried to describe the very distinct smell in the corners between the halls – a mixture of oil, metal and acid (used for wire drawing) – which immediately gave me some vivid childhood memories back, because my fathers clothes used to smell exactly that way.
Nowadays there’s a huge change going on in this area – the industrial production has moved away and the old factory buildings are used for start-ups, design-offices and media-companies. It’s probably a matter of time till the old smell will be replaced with the odor of cappuccino blowing gently out of the otherwise odor-free working spaces.
